Revitalization of Nakhon Chum Old Market in Kamphaeng Phet, Thailand

Nakhon Chum village is old community in Kamphaeng Phet that once was the center of local trading in this region.  It is the fact that the location of the community is the place where Klong Suan Mak and Ping River meet and merge together.  In history, rivers and streams were regular transportation. So, the place where a river and a stream met usually became the trading or transportation center.  Regarding to this, Nakhon Chum market born as a result of transportation.  Later in 1960s, new infrastructure were built including roads and streets. The boats transportation decreased dramatically and were replaced by road transportation. Consequently, Nakhon Chum market has less visitors and several local business firms was shut down and closed.

The Local government led by District Mayor and his council members with the support from the Kamphaeng Phet Governor agreed to bring back the prosperity of the market by revitalizing the atmosphere, the old history of the market including old way of life.  However, the revitalization was not success as it should be due to the poor management and unclear vision.  Also, the Nakhon Chum old market challenged with the sustainability.  It is my interest to know how community and market dwellers shall handle with this matters and able to pass through it by which means to end.  Some of the beautiful pictures as shown below:
